Description

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED

Join Laurie Foss, Terri Siegenthaler, and Victoria Smith on a Super Tuesday birding trip to the Shield Ranch. This coincides with the Westcave CBC which the ranch is a part of. The birds seen on this field trip will contribute to the ranch list for the CBC.

The Shield Ranch, located west of Austin, has 6800 acres of classic Hill Country terrain, including 6.5 miles of Barton Creek. It has been in continuous operation by the same family since its purchase in 1938. The Shield Ranch is noted for its long history of environmental stewardship while operating as a working cattle ranch. In the late 1990’s, the owners placed about 95% of the ranch under two conservation easements held by The Nature Conservancy and the City of Austin.

The field trip will include a combination of driving and hiking, according to conditions present at the time. Hiking will be on dirt roads and foot trails with rugged terrain.

Expect to see a nice variety of wintering sparrows, waterfowl on the numerous creeks and ponds around the ranch, raptors and other wintering and resident birds.

Dress appropriate to the weather!

Directions to the ranch will be sent once you have registered.
